Amber of the finest quality and richness of
colour is found along the southern shores of the Baltic Sea.
Raw amber is a translucent fossil resin exuded
from various, now extinct, conifers, 60 million years ago.
Buried in the ground, it achieved a stable state through chemical
change and the loss of volatile constituents. Ofen flora and
fauna - particularly insects - were trapped in the resin,
and these now have a permanent form.
Amber is found in shades of yellow, brown, red
and green. It is also believed to have healing properties.
When gently rubbed, amber becomes electrically
charged. The word 'electric' comes from electron, the
Greek word for amber.
